Synopsis MaxwellSmart,actingasaprotocolofficersinceCONTROLwasdisbandedintheearly1970s,isreactivatedasacounterintelligenceagentbyCommanderDrury(KennethMars)oftheUnitedStatesIntelligenceAgency.KAOS,longconsidereddefunct,hasbeenrevitalizedbyacorporatetakeover.ItsfirstschemeinvolvesturningaforgottenAmericanscientistandusinghisweathercontrolmachinetoextort$250billionUSdollarsfromtheUnitedStatesGovernment.Drury,convincedthatonlySmarthastheexpertisetocombatKAOS,giveshimcarteblanchetoreactivateformerCONTROLagentstoassisthiminhistask.AlongwithDrury'sbumblingaide,Beamish(SteveLevitt),SmartrecruitsLarrabee(who,believingthathewasunderordersfromRichardNixontostayathispostuntilrelieved,hasbeenlivinginhisofficeinthenow-abandonedCONTROLheadquarterstendinghisofficeplants),Agent13,HymietheRobot(nowemployedasacrashtestdummy)andultimately,hiswife99(BarbaraFeldon)tofindthesecurityleakthatallowedthescientisttodefect,locatetheweathermachineanddisarmit.TheyareopposedbyKAOSmoleswithintheUSIA,whoareabletopredictMax'severymovewiththeaidofstolencopiesof99'sunpublishedmemoirs.ThevisibleheadoftheKAOSschemeisrevealedtobeMax'soldnemesis,Siegfried,butheismerelytheagentofahigherexecutivewhomevenhehasnevermet.ThishigherpowerisfinallyrevealedasNicholasDemente(HaroldGould),99'spublisher,whointendsnotonlytoextortthemoneybutalsotocreateweatherthatwillkeeppeopleeternallyindoorsandinterferewithtelevisionreception,forcingmillionstoentertainthemselvesbybuyingDemente'sbooksandpublications.
